Annual list of the novels, audio books, graphic novels, and trades I read—as I go.

RECKLESS: FRIEND OF THE DEVIL

Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips

Second book in this near-modern crime series, led by the casually dangerous Ethan Reckless. I open these with the same anticipation as any detective novel.

BONE

Jeff Smith

The complete epic edition. A fantasy primer. Jeff, keep an eye out for a bill from my orthopedist due to the acute tendinitis brought on by this weighty tome.

GOFFALL

Van Jensen

A debut novel packed with events, concepts, and storylines far greater than a sleepy Nebraska can hold. Pretty excited to see how Ron Howard and Imagine translate this to the television screen.

NEW FRONTIERS

Darwin Cooke

Repackage one of my favorite tales with a slew of new stuff in a lovely hardcover and I’ll gladly pay the cost.

WHAT I TALK ABOUT WHEN I TALK ABOUT RUNNING

Haruki Murakami

It's diabolical when a book inadvertently calls you writing and running prowess into question. If you do either or—god help you—both, you may find yourself pounding the pavement and keyboard harder than before.

SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW

Tom King, Bilquis Every & Matheus Lopes

A science fiction/fantasy tale of revenge and finding one’s source of power in the unforgiving reaches of space.

NANJING; THE BURNING CITY

Ethan Young

A painfully beautiful story of survival in impossible circumstances. Loved every panel.

RAZOR GIRL

Carl Hiaasen

A criminal romp through Key West that resembled nothing of my faux Honeymoon in 1990—which is a good thing.

THE DRAGON PATH

Ethan Young

The first in what hopefully is an ongoing series of graphic novels that cold grow with their readers.

THE THOUSAND DEMON TREE

Jeffrey Alan Love

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In an illustrated story with no words, these unbelievable pictures are worth a thousand demons.

DESTROY ALL MONSTERS

Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips

A crucial spoke in the Reckless story wheel, with a story that spins and builds to an explosive finish, for Ethan and Anna.

THE STORYTELLER

Dave Grohl

Rock & Roll’s favorite son recalls his unbelievable life through a series of stories that inspire, break, and warm the heart.

PREACHER

Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon

Never read this beloved series form the beginning. A tale that goes for the throat, while it’s stabbing you in the back.

ON BASILISK STATION

David Weber

This one came recommended by another writer who’d read my book. It’s a tight military sci fi tale of merit versus hierarchy.

KAIJUMAX

Zander Cannon

Do you love kaiju? And do you love prison dramas? I so, this is your series. Zander’s colorful epic has it all.

SCUMBAG

Remender, Larosa, Robinson, Powell, Boschi, Craig, & Dinisio

A drug-fueled, super-charged, 70s injected, hyper-visualized super-spy adventure, with a most disagreeable protagonist that you can't help but root for.

THE LIGHT YEARS

RWW Greene

The first chapter of Rob Greene’s debut hooked me deep. I had to get to the end of this clever, family and time-based sci fi drama. Dig.

BRZRKR: VOLUME ONE

Keanu Reeves, Matt Kindt, Ron Garney & Bill Crabtree

Is there a bigger line-up of talent than this book in recent years? This series kicks off with little of the ultra violence, and paints it bloody mark across time.

BLACK HAMMER

Jeff Lemire, Dean Ormston & Dave Stewart

Many laude this series, so no better place than go than the beginning of this genre mashing tale. Perfect for those who miss superhero tales like the Vertigo days.

SHIRTLESS BEAR-FIGHTER

Jody Lehup, Sebastian Garner & Nil Vendrell

If you want an off the hook, ursine-based, power struggle between the establishment and freedom-loving people who eschew tops, this is for you.

THE FOREVER WAR

Joe Halderman

Burned through this spiraling expenditure of youth after meeting the author this summer. A must read in time-based science fiction.

THE BABOON: THE TEMPLE OF ETERNAL LIFE

Jamie Jones

Jamie's love for classic newspaper adventure strips and pulp shines though in this collected edition.

THE COLOUR OF MAGIC

Terry Pratchett

The hilarious and vivid opener to the Discworld series. Laughed my way through this one, and straight into the next.

THE LIGHT FANTASTIC

Terry Pratchet

The sheer creativity on display in this book boggles the mind. These characters are alive.

MICHAEL GOLDEN’S MARVEL STORIES - ARTIST’S EDITION

Michael Golden

A collection of pure magic by the most influential comic artist in the last 50 years. Buy a copy. If you can’t find or afford one, make friends with someone who has one and spend time with these masterworks.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD

Quentin Tarantino

If you dig one of my favorite films by the auteur director, as I do, this fleshes out the story world and adds more depth to the fictional characters and ends up in a different place.

LA MANO DEL DESTINO

J Gonzo

1960’s lucha libre action, the teeters on the edge of mystical. A stylish, yet honest, tale of a fantastic world leaves me wanting more.

THE OBELISK GATE

NK Jemisin

I had to keep the ball rolling on this unique SFF world. The characters from the first book live much different lives in this one and move toward a questionable future. Looking forward to the next one.

BLACK WIDOW (Issues 7–12)

Mark Waid, Chris Samnee & Matt Wilson

A spy noir thrill er that delves in to Natasha’s past and builds a new world around it. This one goes from sky, to city, to snow, to water, to underground, and too the moon and back.

BLACK WIDOW (Issues 1–6)

Mark Waid, Chris Samnee & Matt Wilson

A spy noir thrill er that delves in to Natasha’s past and builds a new world around it. This one goes from sky, to city, to snow, to water, to underground, and too the moon and back.

DO A POWERBOMB

Daniel Warren Johnson & Mike Spicer

Daniel tackles another journey of loss, wrapped in an obvious love for the subject. An enjoyable tale on every level.

THE FIFTH SEASON

NK Jemisin

Outside my normal fare, but came highly recommended, and I loved it. An interesting use of POV that tied into the story in a way I’ve never read before. An original tale that I’m happy to venture further.

BETA RAY BILL

Daniel Warren Johnson & Mike Spicer

An intergalactic/dimensional, science fiction fantasy romantic spin on Pinocchio with Mjölnir's side Korbinite.

THE LAST DAYS OF MAGIC

Mark L Tompkins

Begins with a mystery, spins into a 14th century geopolitical power play for the fate of magic. Enough real-world touch points to leave you wondering if it could be true, and what comes next.

CRYPTOCRACY

Van Jensen & Pete Woods

Nothing like a well-done conspiracy that leaves you questioning your sense of agency.

ALL-STAR SUPERMAN

Grant Morrison & Frank Quietly

On a lot of "favorites" lists. Big Superman fan, but I never connected with the story, so I'll chalk it up to me.

THE MOUNTAINS IN THE SEA

Ray Nayler

A SFWA Nebula finalist and an absolutely beautiful book full of intrigue and deep questions on life.

THE HUMAN TARGET: VOLUME TWO

Tom King & Greg Smallwood

King's story delivers a layered and well-voiced take on DOA with the JLI line-up. Messr. Smallwood shows why he's one of the best in the game. Full-stop.

ARCA

Van Jensen & Jesse Lonergan

A page-turning science fiction tale of class, paranoia, and the power of the written word. (it’s really good)

WONDER WOMAN: DEAD EARTH

Daniel Warren Johnson & Mike Spicer

A gut wrenching post-apocalyptic struggle between trust and redemption.

THE WISDOM OF CROWDS

Joe Abercrombie

Joe wraps up another big arc in a bloody Gordian knot. It's been a long and personal journey punctuated with a fair share of subdural haematoma .

GRENDEL, KENTUCKY

Jeff McComsey & Tommy Lee Edwards

Love a good epic poem adaptation, and this team serves up a good one.
